Takin' it Easy...

Lighten up while you still can
Don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand
And take it easy.   ~Eagles 1972

Charles and I set off on our summer RV travels with a simple goal: slow down and enjoy the little things. Short drives, small towns, local music, and charming farmers' markets and fairs. So far, so good.

We have been camping at the Riverwalk RV park on the Yadkin river since June 4th and our stay ends tomorrow. This campground has it all. Large, shaded camping spaces, beautiful scenery, live music, a laid back atmosphere, and the friendliest staff on the planet.

during our stay, we've enjoyed scenic drives through the Blue Ridge mountains, slow walks listening to songbirds, and friendly chats with fellow campers. Ou most memorable excursion was a trip to the legendary town of Mayberry. Yes, the one made famous by the Andy Griffith show.

The tourist destination of Mayberry is part of Mt. Airy, NC, the birthplace of Andy Griffith and his home for about twenty years. There is a real place named Mayberry, NC. It's a post office about 40 miles north of Mt. Airy in the blue ridge mountains and the birthplace of Andy’s mother and grandparents.

Many of the locations mentioned in the TV show are actual places Andy frequented in his hometown. While we were there, Charles got his hair cut at Floyd’s Barber shop. The Barber, Jeff Doty, entertained us with trivia about the young Andy Griffith, the small town of Mt. Airy, and his own interest in solving cold-case crimes. His own investigation of a 55-year-old murder that led to the conviction of an innocent man, earned him a Pulitzer prize nomination. You can read about the case in his books Piggyback and A Convenient Man.

The weather has been sunny and mild since we set off. We're hoping it stays that way as we head to our next stop in Northeast Tennessee. See Ya’ll down the road a bit.
